Dreadnought Guitar History

The Dreadnought style guitar model was first created by the Martin Guitar company in 1916 for the Oliver Ditson Company publishing firm based in Boston. Back then the guitars weren’t sold with the Martin name or brand but with the Oliver Ditson brand name. In 1931 Martin began producing Dreadnought guitars that carried the Martin name.

The first two models were D–1 and D–2.

The D–1 guitars were made with a mahogany body instrument, later it became the D–18.
The Martin D–2 guitar was made with a rose wood body. The is one of the the most popular style of steel string guitar, the rosewood body Dreadnought.

The first Martin Dreadnought guitars all featured the 12–fret neck of the first Ditson design. From 1934 the D–28s and D–18s officially were offered with the 14–fret neck clear from the neck. This is standard these days.

Dreadnought Guitar Legacy

Because of the large body and wood types the dreadnoughts have a deep deep bass response which started with the D–28. This was a very unusual for musicians which were used to the clear treble and overall balance of the normal smaller instruments they were using.
When country music performers started using the Dreadnought guitar the real revolution began. It was the guitar for backing up vocals, fiddles, and banjos when no bass or bass guitar were used.

Dreadnought Guitar Name

The Dreadnought guitars are named after a class of World War I era British battleships, "Dreadnought".
