Studio and Audio Mixer Overview - WIKI

A mixer is either an anlog mixer, software mixer or digital mixer that has the ability to mix multiple audio tracks or sources and combines them for example to a stereo track, this is called mixing. In a music production studio for example this is done to create a mix of the seperatly recorded tracks like the vocals, drums, guitar and bass and combine them to the stereo track for playback on a stereo system like your computer, iPod, iPad, etc.

Analog Mixers

The basic analog mixers have different uses. For example

- Live sound: mixing music, like a band
- Live sound: mixing music with a presenter, like an aerobics instructor
- Live sound: mixing different microphones, used for different presenters at an event

- Studio: Mixing different tracks before recording them to a computer
- Studio: As a microphone preamp and sending each track to a computer for recording
- Studio: Mixing different tracks from the recorded tracks.

Digital Mixers

Digital mixers are much more expensive. That's why they are usually only used for specific hightech events and studios. Because they allow a lot of tracks and flexible routing of audio they are usually also used for complex situations like a large studio where they want to record a lot of tracks, instruments or vocalists at once. Or at large venues where there are a lot of different performances with different requirements.

Software Mixers

Software mixers are usually part of recording software. The software mixer can handle many of the different tasks of a real mixer, but of course is also dependent on the audio interface. Especially for mixing music the software mixer is a great tool because it allows almost unlimited tracks of mixing and with the highest possible quality. Getting the music into the computer still requires a good studio microphone and a good mic preamp and audio interface.

DJ Mixers

DJ Mixers are a special kind of mixers that have special sliders which are far more practical than normal sliders on a normal live or studio mixer.
